Wilshire Crest Elementary School

We’re almost complete with a new edible garden at Wilshire Crest Elementary School. Redwood raised beds, fruit trees, an espalier fruit tree row, an outdoor kitchen, and a fully automated sprinkler system.

We are putting in a lot of edible gardens at schools. In this city water is precious. Edible gardens by their nature are pretty water intensive. We understand that if we do not build gardens that are water efficient, then this city’s appetite for school gardens will decrease. Thus, this garden is full drip irrigation, delivered directly to the plant’s roots.

” Hello Bravo HS Volunteers,

Thank you so much for you help with EnrichLA this Saturday! You guys did a fantastic job as you can see from the blog photos here.

We are looking forward to finishing up the gardens at Wilshire Crest Elementary next Tue, Nov. 20th 12-5pm. Sign up here (we’d love to see you).

Tomas and the rest of the team were so impressed with your skills, humor and perseverance. We appreciate your efforts throughout the whole project & would love you to join us as we complete the build. As a show of personal gratitude (not affiliated with Enrich LA) let me know if you guys need anything for college applications. I know having a fresh pair of eyes can be helpful and I’d be happy to review your personal essays — though I trust you guys will let your unique personalities will shine through no matter what.

Good luck these few months until winter break & hopefully see you guys on Tuesday’s build! Don’t forget to sign up even if for a little bit.

Best,
Lola Lee

A great bunch of humans built a garden at wilshire crest elementary

Fall is harvest season and what better way to celebrate than by adding to our community’s green space and improving garden access for our neighborhood students. On Saturday, November 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the EnrichLA organization will install a huge new edible garden at Wilshire Crest Elementary School (5241 W. Olympic Blvd.). Over the last couple of years, several classroom bungalows have been removed from the school’s campus, creating a large amount of open space. School officials, representatives from City Council District 4 and community volunteers have been working on long-term plans for the overall greening of the campus, and this weekend’s project will be the first step in that long-term beautification. The school currently has a small garden for its students, but the new project, which includes fruit and avocado trees, paths, picnic tables, an outdoor food prep area, a native/butterfly garden and a large array of raised beds for herbs and vegetables, will more than quadruple the school’s existing educational garden space.

EnrichLA, headed by community activist and former city council candidate Tomás O’Grady, has helped build gardens at dozens of schools throughout Los Angeles and makes it its mission to make sure there’s “an edible garden in every school.” Additional funding for the project comes from a Los Angeles Community Beautification Grant and a gift from the Windsor Squarre-Hancock Park Historical Society. Volunteers from the Walt Disney company will help with pre-build duties on Friday, November 9, but additional volunteers are still needed for the construction and planting on Saturday. If you’d like to help, just and click on the “Volunteer” button here for the Saturday, November 10 event. No special skills are needed beyond a pair of willing hands. Lunch will be

Wilshire Crest Elementary School. The Plan.

We build on November 10th.

Wilshire Crest initial sketches and Before

Initial rough sketch

West Field (approximately 70’x70’ = 4,900 square feet)

The plan includes large edible planting fields, 16 redwood raised planting beds, 16 fruit trees, 8 large redwood picnic tables, an outdoor kitchen/arbor ( for washing vegetables) arbor an herb garden and an native /butterfly/rain catchment area.
• REQUIREMENT: Area needs to be brought up to grade. Soils must be imported, mixed with the compost that is already at the site and finally spread throughout the area.
Reducing paving and increasing permeability on our campuses is for the comfort and enjoyment of students and staff as well as to support the ecology and healthful environment of our city.
