Walgrove Elementary School

In partnership with LAUSD, and Mia Lehrer and Associates and Walgrove Elementary School, Enrich La, a non-profit, proposes to create a schoolyard habitat encompassing 25,000 square feet of its campus formerly occupied by six bungalows. This is NOT AN EDIBLE GARDEN.

The Plan:

To create a schoolyard habitat built on sound ecological principles for habitat restoration and on innovative educational programming. The schoolyard habitat design has been developed by the Architect in concert with teachers, ecologists and community-based environmental nonprofit groups.

This schoolyard habitat will offer an opportunity for all Walgrove students to become stewards of their landscape and to engage with nature in a very meaningful way. This has been demonstrated at Leo Politi Elementary School.

Project Description:

In partnership with LAUSD, and Mia Lehrer and Associates and Walgrove Elementary School, Enrich La, a non-profit, proposes to create a schoolyard habitat encompassing 25,000 square feet of its campus formerly occupied by six bungalows. This is NOT AN EDIBLE GARDEN.

The proposed area has had its asphalt removed and a soils test has been conducted by OEHS.

In summary the plan involves backfilling parts of the 25,000 sf site with OEHS approved imported dirt and to install decomposed granite and agricultural soil in the remaining parts. Sprinklers are to be installed along with trees and shrubs.

Scope of work: The scope of work and its cost is shared by the following entities;

Los Angeles Unified Facilities:

Provide and install 707 linear feet of redwood header (2×4 redwood common) along the perimeter asphalt cut.

Provide and install 782 linear feet of redwood border (2×4 redwood common) to separate the decomposed granite from the soil.

Provide and install 13,800 square feet of Decomposed Granite in areas as shown.

Provide and install the remainder of the site with LAUSD-OEHS imported fill dirt.

Provide and install sprinklers as outlined in the attached sprinkler plans.

Enrich La:

Provide and install 42 shade trees. (Tree selection to be approved by LAUSD arborist). Stake appropriately.

Provide and install 38 yards of City of Los Angeles Compost to amend into fill dirt in planting areas.

Provide and install grasses and shrubs and seeding as shown. (All plants to be approved)

Provide appropriate insurance as required by LAUSD and collect all waiver paperwork and present to school.

Arrange with LAUSD Tree Services for delivery of 32 yards of tree mulch and install at areas shown.

All volunteer work by Enrich LA is to be in conjunction with local volunteer assets. All workdays to be permitted with an LAUSD License agreement from the Leasing & Space Utilization department.

Mia Lehrer Architects:

Provide all necessary plans and details as required to complete this project.

Walgrove Elementary School:

Provide as required all necessary Saturday/Sunday custodial overtime that is deemed necessary to allow volunteers to complete this project.
