I interviewed Tomas. He told me that he likes native plants the best because they are easier to care for and use less water. Next I asked him why he helps schools make gardens. He said, “I don’t think that schools should be wall to wall concrete. They should be green and covered in foliage.”…..

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday at Glenfeliz Blvd. Elementary School in Atwater Village!
This was a different type of garden build. We were building benches, tables, and planting a variety of flowers and herbs for a new reading garden that the principal called “The Park.” The garden is designed to act as a beautiful and welcoming outdoor space for students to ready, study, and enjoy. In a time where school funding (including that of Libraries) is being cut, it is as important as ever to encourage students to learn, and help them enjoy that endeavor. This reading garden will surely do just that!
The turnout was larger than expected, and City Councilman Eric Garcetti even joined us for some hard work, hauling compost to the site of Glenfeliz’s existing edible garden.
EnrichLA nutrition director Kelly Burke kept everyone hungry with delicious salads and strata, made fresh in the school kitchen.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this wonderful event! We hope to see you at future garden builds!
