A long time ago there was a tree named Ashton

“A long time ago there was a tree named Ashton. He was a lonely tree that lived at Elysian Heights Elementary School. The kids were mean to the tree. They would kick it and stomp on it. They would even pick his leaves. One day a strange girl came to school. She was from New York and her name was Ashley. She had on a denim skirt with a gray t-shirt with gray hair and a sparkly red bow on top of her head. She always would get teased by the kids. They called her sock head and dust face. She was very smart and loved to read. So, she read in the garden, often against the tree, every day. The tree wanted to be her friend so he had to show her that he was alive. With the girl on the tree, he waved his branches up, down, across, and all other ways he could think of, until the girl smiled and told him, “I will come back tomorrow with a surprise” “BYE’’ and she left. The tree waited with curiosity until she came back the next morning. She was carrying a white sack that sparkled. She shook some dust and he began to have wonderful powers. He shot red sparks on everything, even the kids. The kids were changing too. They started to feed the tree and water it. They loved the tree and they did not realize it. He was finally happy again. TODAY ENRICH LA ALONG WITH MR. O’GRADY BUILT BENCHES AROUND ASHTON, AND NOW WE AT ELYSIAN HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL READ TO ASHTON.”

A great build at Elysian Heights Elementary

“A  “Big Thank you” to you and all the volunteers.  It was an amazing experience and the garden is BEAUTIFUL.  I love it.  I can’t wait for the students to see it on Monday.  It  was a pleasure working with your team, and getting to know Erin “

Veronica Herrera, Elysian Heights Elementary, Principal

Thank Elysian Heights Elementary School for inviting us to come do a build and beautification day at your school. Thank you also to all the fantastic volunteers from the community, EnrichLA and the Disney volunteers who joined our special guest for the day who wanted to do a build for a birthday. Happy birthday Ms Erin D!

A bench was built around the established tree in the garden, the whole garden also got mulched and the garden beds were amended with compost.

The kitchen and arbor. This one got a cabinet underneath and the sink is coming on Monday.

“Erin Douglas wrote: “Looks beautiful Tomas O’Grady. It would be so great to capture the faces of the kids on film as they are seeing their renovated garden for the first time. Your a gem, and I am so excited to be collaborating with you and EnrichLA. I want to be a bigger part of your amazing work. ”

Elysian Heights Elementary Build on Saturday June 16th

Tomorrow, June 16th, is our last build for this school year. We’ve been doing some pre-building today which went very well. A handful of students stayed after school to help pouring a concrete slab for the future kitchen and arbor.

Eager helpers assisting Tomas.

Come join us tomorrow at Elysian Heights Elementary for the last build of the year! Visit our volunteer page for more information.

Today a concrete slab, tomorrow... a kitchen!
