Alta Loma Elementary School

Alta Loma Elementary, a title one school is headed by Ellen DeLeston a very lovely and unassuming Principal. The school’s population is poor by any standard, yet Ellen and her team of proud parents pitched in to make the garden a reality. This school is not used to being in the limelight.

By the Numbers:

Funding sources = Fox Gives $5,000, Mid City Neighborhood Council $5,000 and Ellen and the school committed $3,000.

The garden is inaccessible by machines.

60 employees from Live Nation broke ground in August 2012 literally with Jack Hammers. They hauled away, a bucket at a time over 60 yards of Asphalt and base. It was 101 degrees.

In addition to many other schools, the Whole Kids Foundation awarded $2,000 in funding for the program. Again in addition to many other schools, Becky Feliciano of Whole Foods Markets Glendale along with her counterparts Heather Bernard of WF Arroyo and Cindy Estorga of WF Pasadena helped Enrich La cover its overhead and the purchase of tools for this project with a 5% fundraising day.75 employees of Fox Give and their partners, Searchlight Films installed sprinklers and they carted IN 23 yards of clean soil + 35 yards of compost + 20 yards of tree mulch.

Lexington Primary Center and Alta Loma Elementary School make delicious fruit kabobs!

Every Thursday and Friday, UCLA students from the organization FeelGood, pair up with EnrichLA and act as garden stewards at Lexington and Alta Loma Elementary school.

This past week, we explored the different parts of a plant- the roots, stem, leaves, flower, fruit, and seeds and tried to guess what each part of the plant each fruit or vegetable was. It was very cool to see that almost all the kids knew that avocados would be classified as a fruit because they had a seed. Also, the kids were very surprised to learn that broccoli is actually the flower of a plant!

After cutting up the jicama, oranges, and grape fruits, we let each kid spear one piece of each fruit with a toothpick to make a fruit kabob! Surprisingly, most kids liked the jicama and didn’t like the grape fruit. Also, almost all the kids knew that oranges carried Vitamin C in them!

Hi there, my name is Nancy Navarro Schultz and I’m happy to be joining such a wonderful group of people at Enrich LA. I’m going to be helping out with some garden design work and gathering information from the schools so we can plan each garden in a beautiful way. I’m also going to  start assisting our garden steward, Marisa at Markham Middle School this week.

Last week we were busy going to a Alta Loma Elementary and Nightingale Middle School, taking some measurements of the areas where the new gardens will be built. Included are some photos from those schools.

ALTA LOMA EDIBLE GARDEN

ALTA LOMA ELEMENTARY NEW EDIBLE GARDEN to be built

750 students of Alta Loma Elementary School will directly benefit from the Alta Loma Farm. The commitment of the school and community to help build the garden in March is nearly as overwhelming

as the dedication to nurture it to fruition for future Alta Loma students. The garden also provides an

alternative activity that promotes teamwork and healthy living in schools that are centered around

sports. The Farm will be a place for the community to gather and rally around the school just like

basketball courts and football stadiums.

Alta Loma Farm will be nestled in an ethnically diverse neighborhood in Central LA that will also directly

benefit from installing the Farm. Nearly half the school’s students are current English Learners and 100%

are receiving free or reduced fee lunches through the federal school lunch program. Providing this garden for these students will expose them to an understanding of nutrition that they are not likely to

receive elsewhere. These demographics are indicative of the surrounding community’s great need for

assistance. As with other EnrichLA gardens, the proposed farm has already inspired parents and community members to be more involved at the school. As we like to say, “Working together, anything

is possible.”
