Emily Maclure

Emily Maclure has been living in Los Angeles for 8 years and works as an event planner and catering coordinator.   She recently took to learning about gardening and thought there would be no better way to get her hands dirty, then to join up with Enrichla.  Born and raised in the Green Mountain State of Vermont,  Emily loves the idea of bringing a bit of ”green ” to local schools and giving kids the ability to have some hands on learning with edible gardens.  There is nothing greater than seeing a community pull together to make a difference.

Volunteering in the Roosevelt High Garden

After

One of ourvery dedicated volunteers, Hanna helped out in the Roosevelt High School garden today. It was a productive day- we tilled, amended, watered, weeded and transplanted, all in just an hour!

After the soil was prepared, Hanna transplanted eggplant seedlings. What a delicious summer it will be! Thanks Hanna!

Special Thanks to Sylmar High School!!

Where would we be without the generosity of others? The Farm King garden volunteer staff would like to thank the good and giving people at Sylmar High School who donated the transplants we will soon plant in the garden. These transplants will become the means by which Thomas Starr King middle schoolers learn (and reap) the benefit of locally grown fruits and vegatables.

Thank you Sylmar High!!

Next Step Lends a Hand to Roosevelt High

Today, a handful of wonderful volunteers from Next Step Ministries helped transform the garden at Roosevelt High School Academy for Environmental and Social Policy. The initial work involved lots of weed removal. The fruit trees surrounding the garden were getting smothered by pesky grass so we had to get them outta there!

Just before lunch, we amended the garden beds with compost and some coffee grounds from Taza Coffee Shop in Echo Park.  The volunteers also pulled out some power tools and fixed a few broken boards. What wonderful volunteers, right?!

As we wrapped up the day’s work, we put in tomato seedlings for the upcoming warm weather. It was a splendid day outside, thanks to Zeena, Hanna and Beth’s wonderful crew from Next Step Ministries!

El Sereno Middle School. The Habitat Garden. Planned for May 18th.

In partnership with the Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa and Gay for Good and others, we seek to create a habitat encompassing 12,000 square feet of campus: The land was formerly under bungalows and covered with asphalt.

SCHEDULED DATE = MAY 18, 2013

HARVEY MILK DAY

Our goal is to create a schoolyard habitat built on sound ecological principles for habitat restoration and on innovative educational programming. Our schoolyard habitat design will be further tweaked as we work with teachers and environmental nonprofit groups.

This schoolyard habitat will offer an opportunity for all El Sereno students to become stewards of their landscape and to engage directly with nature. Schoolyard habitats create an opportunity for on-campus curriculum-based science learning. The students will not only be part of the work day when we build this habitat, but can be part of its upkeep. Over time, we expect the habitat to become a natural extension of their classroom.

This has happened at Leo Politi Elementary School in Pico Union: it is their secret to increased academic performance in the sciences, as well as to the kids’ heightened engagement in all of their academic subjects. (See http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/16/local/la-me-bird-school-20120416 ). “Together we can do it at El Sereno Middle” TOMAS.O.GRADY

Proposals:
Create a schoolyard habitat that to the degree possible restores native species.
Create an outdoor classroom in which students learn about science, ecology, and environmental stewardship.
Create a working farm
Schoolyard Greening in Los Angeles and Beyond:
The El Sereno Habitat has been inspired by so many successful models of schoolyard habitats and gardens across the Los Angeles Unified School District: from Leo Politi to Calvert, as well as from Brentwood Science Magnet to Wilshire Crest Elementary School—to name just a handful of the numerous examples of green schoolyards in the District.
The El Sereno Habitat team will work closely with teachers and a coalition of organizations and stakeholders whose goal is to green the LAUSD and to install a garden—native or edible—on each of its 800+ campuses.

Mr. Eageler’s Class Upcycles!

Did you know that Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour?! That’s a lot of waste!

FarmKing2_March2013

This week Mr. Eagler’s class tackled the plastic bottle overload problem by converting  water bottles headed for the trash into lovely flowers vases. It’s called upcyling. Upcycling is the process of converting waste into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.

FarmKing4_March2013

The students had fun picking and arranging their bouquets in uniquely decorated plastic water bottle flower vases.

Can you find a secondary use for products headed for the trash? Here’s some cool ideas: http://www.upcyclethat.com/
