Garden Internship

 

DESCRIPTION

The Garden Intern refines his/her garden management and teaching skills while engaging in the daily responsibilities of an educational garden. Under the supervision of the Garden Ranger and Program Director, the Garden Intern is mentored in the practical skills and philosophy of garden management. The Garden Intern is placed at one or more schools for the semester, based on your availability and desired location.

Opportunities include but are not limited to:

  • Gaining experience maintaining an organic garden
  • Assisting the Garden Ranger in teaching weekly garden classes
  • Mentoring, modeling respect and curiosity for learning & encouraging students’ interests
  • Building garden-based education curriculum with Garden Ranger and Program Director
  • Leading outreach events or Saturday Garden Build projects
  • Leading garden research projects associated with grantors and partners

REQUIREMENTS

  • Interest in organic gardening skills and garden related projects
  • Interest in teaching and classroom management skills –
  • Passion for volunteering, energetic and independent thinking
  • Ability to complete tasks effectively and proactively

QUALIFICATION SKILLS

  • Strong ability to do desktop business research and analysis;
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office and internet research;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with teams;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Hard-working, organized and strong sense of responsibility.
  • Willing to literally get your hands dirty.

OPPORTUNITIES

Is this a paid internship?

No.

Is there any training?

No, however, we will train you and teach the necessary procedures as you go.

Where/What are the school sites?

Our schools are within the Los Angeles area, ranging from the west side to the South L.A.

Is transportation provided?

No.

Is lunch provided?

Lunch is provided at the office. Not at garden sites.

Do I need to have any experience with gardens?

No experience is required, but we do want enthusiastic positive people with a high interest in gardening or nutrition and who are seeking to learn.

When is my application due?

Since this is a revolving internship, meaning, there is no deadline for applications. Applications are accepted on a regular basis.

What is the interview process? Do I need to do it in person?

Interviews will be conducted in person in the office once your application has been reviewed. The interviews are designed for you also to see if we are a good fit for you!

When will I be notified if I have been accepted?

All candidates will know if they have been accepted after their interview. Candidates will then decide whether to accept the intern position.

Do I get a chance to select the site to which  I want to go or will I be assigned to a site?

Yes, high school students can be and have been interns.

Do I have to be in a certain major or field to apply?

No, all majors are welcomed.

FAQ’s: Project Details

Where will I work?

There will be two sites: the office and garden sites. On garden days you will go to the school site for that particular day and on non-garden days you will go to the office.

What kind of projects will I work on?

Garden days consists of building, maintaining,and planting. Many of the activities include digging to plant, shoveling bark, building tables, working with the water system, lifting soil and other materials.

In the office tasks include writing grants, updating the organization’s website, updating school site posts onto the website, and other related research for the organization.

FAQ’s: Time Commitment and Conflicts

What is time commitment for the intern position?

Given that this is a revolving internship the only requirement asked for is a commitment of 16 hours a week minimum.

Is there any flexibility in the internship dates?

Yes, we are flexible with your schedule and can accommodate.

I have to take a summer school class. Can I still do the internship?

Yes, we will accommodate to your schedule.

What if I can not stay the entire time?

We do want committed interns and, because this internship is flexible, it is expected for you to be there when you said so.
