Digging in the Dirt at Weemes Elementary

This week at Weemes Elementary we were able to piggyback off of Ms Arias’ soil unit to learn about parts of the soil and taste a sweet vegetable that grows in the ground. ¬†First, we harvested our beets and the students peeled them into long ribbons to mix with salt and apple-cider vinegar. Tasty! Then we got our hands dirty and everyone gathered their soil samples to test if our garden soil has more sand or more clay. The students loved shaking the test jar, but now the class will have to wait until next week when the soil will settle and we can see the final results (SPOILER: you can see the layers of clay, silt, and sand beginning to form below.)
