(First, here’s a picture of a sunflower that made it through the winter! How cool!)
This week we reviewed what our nutrient tests told us last week, then we talked about how we could fix it! We learned about fertilizers and amendments and how amendments help the soil over time while fertilizers have nutrients that the plants can use right away. Then the students were broken up into groups; each group was assigned to a bed and was responsible for adding both bone meal and blood meal to the soil to help with our Nitrogen and Phosphorus deficiencies.
With the younger students, we learned what seedlings need to grow big and strong. Soil, sun, water, and space! I had a bunch of tomato seedling in tiny cells and they needed more Space. So we spent the rest of class helping our new little tomato friends get some more room.
Then we had a quick kale chip snack. With a bit of roasted broccoli and cauliflower too.
