Soil + Water = More than just Mud

Today at Glassel Park Elementary the students got to dirty their hands testing the water content in 3 different soil samples. We did the infamous Squeeze Ball Test, used by professional gardeners around the world, to determine how moist the ground should be for our plants. Just like in Goldilocks and the Three Bears, we had one sample that was too dry, one that was too wet and one that was just right. The students had to grab a handful of soil from each container and try to form it into a ball. If the ball completely fell apart, the soil was too dry, if the ball held together perfectly, the soil was too wet, if the soil ball was somewhere in the middle, it was just right! The students had to come to a consensus about which sample was which, and they all passed with flying colors. Luckily, this story ended with dirt under everyone’s fingernails and not angry bears.
