Harvesting, Prepping Beds, and Transplanting

Students this week prepared the garden beds for planting and placed seedlings in their new home. They learned about how each plant requires different nutrients- peas fix nitrogen, tomatoes are heavy feeders, and cabbages like cooler weather. We prepared the beds by pulling out older plants that had gone to seed- like lettuce and mustard greens. Then we loosened the soil, added in compost, and smoothed out the soil. Next, we watered our seedlings, made holes and spaced them out, then planted our spring/summer seedlings. Finally, we watered in the seedlings.

We also harvested a bunch of produce to share with Mr. Perez for his nutrition and cooking classes. Pictured above is a student holding a cabbage and another student took this brilliant photo!
