Companions in the garden

Last week on Thursday on March 23rd, students learned about companion planting. To begin with, we talked about the three sisters which are, beans, squash and corn. Why they are companions, and the benefits they provide each other when planted together. Afterwards, they played a companion planting card game. Each student received a card with a fruit of veggie on it, with it’s likes and dislikes, or in other words it companions. For the returning 6 grade classes, instead of playing the game, we did a quick review of the three sisters, then headed out to explore the garden to do a mini project in class. The little project was to plan out at least three beds for companion planting, as they referred  to a companion planting list that I provided for them. During the activity a nice little ladybug landed on one of the students arm!
