March 21st was my first day at Clifford! As I will be taking over for Ranger Ashley for the rest of the year. It sure was a rainy morning, which did keep one class inside, but at least the rest of the classes got to go out to the garden. It was the start of a new rotation, and since these classes have been here for other rotations, there was no need for garden introduction, just a quick reminder what rules we should always follow in the garden. The days lesson was on companion planting, focusing on the three sisters, corn, squash, and beans. We talked about the benefits they provide each other when they are all planted together. We also talked about a few other examples, and played a game of companion planting buddies with cards. The taste of the day was some romaine lettuce from the garden! There was actually two little surprises in the garden, I spotted a Black Swallowtail Caterpillar on one of our fennel plants that one class had the chance to see and the strawberries are starting to come in!
