Direct Sowing at Clifford

On Tuesday April 25th we learned about Direct Sowing! Direct sowing simply means, directly planting a seed into the ground vs. planting in seedling trays. We talked about why direct sowing is done, why gardeners or farmers may choose to do trays first for starting seeds, and it’s benefits. For the upper grade classes, each student received a seed packet, to read the information on it, specifically the “direct sowing” and/or “starting indoors” instructions.  Because we had just talked about warm and cool season veggies the week before, students got the chance to direct sow different warm season veggie seeds in the garden. Since there were still cool season veggies in the garden, the upper grades were able to clear a bed to prep for direct sowing of seeds. Most of the clearing were lettuces, so all classes ended with a taste of a salad with strawberries from the garden!
