Calvert – Seeds of Hope

Hello Garden friends,

Today at Calvert, the first of the radish seeds popped up from the garden beds! This is no easy feat in a garden that has no automatic water. I am so proud of the fourth graders. Their teachers told me that they had been using the hose I bought them during their recess to try and keep the garden alive!

Today’s lesson was about resilience. About the ability of the garden to bounce back after a trauma. The trauma caused by intense storms, fires, or severe droughts. We talked about how seeds can lay dormant in the soil for long periods, until their moment to shine. In addition to plants, we talked about how humans need to be resilient to survive when the atmospheric composition is changing and making it harder for us to grow food. The big question was…How does changing the air, affect the way we grow food?

Well, the answer lies in dissecting the question into different components. How is the air changing? Why is it changing? What can we do to stop the change or prepare for it?

The lesson about resilience also included lots of useful information about the composition of the air, and how we are putting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Finally, we moved to more solution based discussion. What can we do to remove carbon dioxide from the air… GROW PLANTS!

So we did! riding high on enthusiasm from the lesson, we planted tons of seeds in the garden and watered them in. Hopefully, the district plumbers will be back next week.
