A garden is not just plants in the ground. A garden is an entire ecosystem from microbes to predators interacting with one another.
Today in the garden we learned about one of the pieces of that complex system: birds! We usually welcome birds in our garden because many of them prey on the caterpillars and insects that eat our plants. My assistant for the day, Ms. Drea, lead the students through the process of making a bird nest material dispenser. We learned what kinds of materials birds might like for their nests and we collected bits throughout the garden. Ever class placed pieces into a coat hanger wrapped in wire. We hung the final product in a nearby tree for our bird friends to find.
