Compost Craziness at Alta Loma

We spent the day learning all about compost and why composting is so important.  The kids walked around the garden and picked up things they thought we could put in our compost and then we talked about the difference between things we should throw in the trash and things that can decompose.

The kids then played a compost relay race where they had to grab one “green” and one “brown” to add to their team’s compost pile.  After the game, we added our compost ingredients to the tumbler in the garden and gave it a good spin!

Originally from Arizona, I was brought out to beautiful Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California where I will be graduating come December with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies.  I grew up with a love of gardening from spending summers on my papou's farm in Greece to helping my parents tend to our personal garden in Arizona.  My passion for the environment and gardening go hand-in-hand and I can't wait to incorporate lessons from my studies to the students I am teaching at Alta Loma!
