All About Seeds at Alta Loma!

The students were excited to plant seeds this day, but for the first part of class we took the time to learn about the tiny seeds we plant.  We talked about how the seed contains everything a seedling needs to sprout and we help it grow when we put the seed in soil and add some water and sunlight.  The students looked at a diagram of the anatomy of a seed and we used vocabulary words such as shoot, seed coat and cotyledon.  After we understood how seeds grow, the students got to plant some flower and cucumber seeds!

Originally from Arizona, I was brought out to beautiful Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California where I will be graduating come December with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies.  I grew up with a love of gardening from spending summers on my papou’s farm in Greece to helping my parents tend to our personal garden in Arizona.  My passion for the environment and gardening go hand-in-hand and I can’t wait to incorporate lessons from my studies to the students I am teaching at Alta Loma!
