Caring for the soil at 6th Ave Elementary

After making compost last week, this week students at 6th Avenue followed up on their understanding of soil health by talking about soil biology. In the soil, live entire ecosystems are as important and interdependent as any habitat above the ground.  In order to care for the soil and ensure there is enough biodiversity and root growth offering structural support, we planted a living mulch of white clover. This will grow just underneath our vegetables this summer and offer a protective skin for our precious soil.
