Studying Seeds at 20th St. Elementary

Last week at 20th St. Elementary was a bit hectic. Their schedule was altered a bit because of their Christmas performances, but we made due!

I began the lessons by asking them questions to reference previous lessons: what vegetables and fruits are in season in the winter? what kinds of veggies and fruits do we eat on winter holidays? Why?

Next, I led the students on a garden walk to see which beds had space for more plants. I let them know that today we were going to be learning about the parts of a seed. We were going to plant seeds because class isn’t going to meet for three weeks due to the holiday – which meant lots of time for the baby plants to grow!

I then led them through drawing and labelling the parts of a seed. The students had a lot of fun drawing their own versions of parts of the seed. They laughed when silly suggestions were made and got excited when their suggestions fit the criteria. After drawing, labelling, and practicing the concept of how these parts of a seed work together we got ready to plant!

I asked them to line up. As I passed out seeds I asked them to form one hand into a “seed cup.” When they all had their seeds I asked them to think about how small the embryo inside the seed must be. They all stared at their seeds in amazement! Then, we went over the steps of planting a seed: 1. find a moist spot. 2. dig a hole by way of poking your finger into the soil up to your first knuckle. 3. place the seed inside and lightly cover it!

I then let them plant their seeds and we lined up to say good bye. Even though the day was a bit different and the students had a lot of energy, I think we all maintained a positive attitude and that really made for a fun lesson.
