The students at RFK took a break from finals to come out and tour their new garden. The kids were excited to explore the garden and identify the different plants growing in it. They enjoyed tasting and learning how to make healthy snacks, and were happy to take a seedling home with them to grow over the summer.
Students were able to choose between jalapeno peppers, basil and tomato seedlings to take home with them.
We snacked on fresh fruit and learned how to use some of the plants growing in the garden to make simple and tasty treats.
This was one of the three different types of basil the students learned about. Red Robin Basil had a sharp and peppery smell, and tasted similar to arugula.
We used traditional Italian basil to make these delicious snacks. Many of the students tasted basil for the first time, and were surprised by its sweet and minty flavor. One student thought it tasted just like pizza, and was excited to take some basil home to cook with!
Although summer vacation was on their minds, the students were eager to visit their garden in the fall and looked forward to spending more time learning about healthy recipes and how to care for their plants.
