We were very happy to be invited to Markham Middle School’s Annual Health Fair this past Friday. It’s the first time that Markham has a health fair and it was organized by the school’s health magnate, Oscar Espinoza. EnrichLA was honored to be participating in this exciting new event with several other groups including Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center, the MKL MACC Oasis Clinic, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Kaiser Permanente Watts Counseling and Learning Center, L.A. Care Health Plan, Office of Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Watts Healthcare Corporation, Watts Healthy Farmers’ Market, Dream Academy, Children’s Institute, Inc, and UCLA Black/Latino AIDS Project.
Our volunteers Alyssa and Jade managed our main booth and offered a fresh and simple snack of tomato slices and fresh basil wrapped up in chard leaves (all things that are growing in the garden at the moment) to participants and encouraged them to visit the garden. Student volunteers took school friends and visitors to the garden where they could help Lucy and myself with weeding, cleaning up and creating mulch pathways, in exchange for edible seedlings.
It was a very successful event and lots of students found out about the garden and came out to help clean up and chat to us about their school and their hopes and dreams for their future. It was another great opportunity for us to connect even more with the community at Markham Middle School.
Thank you Oscar and team for inviting us and thank you Markham for inviting us into your school. I am proud to be a part of your garden and school!
