The Home and Garden Economics program at Gratts Elementary School is up and running. Thanks to the co-ordinating efforts of Ms Ana Lopez we now have an after school program there on Tuesdays and the first one was a hit!
A very excited group of students and parents joined me in the beautiful garden for some garden talk, planting and snacking. We wandered around the garden for a while, familiarizing ourselves with all the fruit trees- plums, peaches, apples and a variety of citrus all grow in the garden.
We cleared a bed of some sad old heads of lettuce and started planting beautiful strawberry seedlings from Sylmar High School. Parents and students all took turns to dig holes and gently planting the seedlings. The students were very good about gently loosening the roots to let the plants know they can start growing!
After the planting we had a quick and simple snack of fresh strawberries dipped in some delicious plain yogurt. Everybody loved it, despite some initial hesitation. As one of the students said, at first you think it is strange, but just try it and you will find out it is delicious!
