The garden is certainly becoming a beloved institution at Trinity Elementary. Our recess hours are overrun with volunteers! The classes were a bit calmer with split lessons on composting and the worm bin. Then the students used what they learned to turn the compost bin and create new bedding for the worms with damp shredded newspaper. They also burried handfuls of finished worm castings into the raised beds. Garden Steward, Ben, brought an extra-special tool to the garden classroom today: a microscope! The students were able to identify individual spores on a mushroom found growing in the garden. They left exclaiming, “Science rocks!”
Tomorrow the garden will be open for Spring Beautification Day. The main project will be to plant dozens of shrubs around the perimeter of the school, but we will also be happy to welcome community volunteers in the garden.
