One of my favorite things about being a garden steward is seeing the positive changes a garden can bring about in people. A while back I was in the garden at Luther Burbank and a student came in and asked if he could water the plants. As he walked around and watered the leafy greens his class planted the previous week other students came in and expressed shock at what he was doing.
When I asked the students why they were so shocked they told me how he was always getting into trouble and being a bit of a rude guy, they couldn’t believe that he was peacefully going around the garden ‘taking care of things’. More students came in to witness this ‘miracle’ and instead of becoming shy or unpleasant he just happily continued watering.
He also planted a piece of green onion that got dropped by the kitchen from making our snack the previous week. It was all dried out when he found it. But he was positive that we can try and plant it and see if it will grow. A couple of weeks later it is doing great. Just goes to show what believing in something and changing your attitude can do.
