Today we kicked off our school lunch composting program. On Fridays we are going to help the students separate compostable items from their discarded lunches and add it to the garden bins. We received a lot of questions from students who have not had their classroom cycle through the garden yet and it’s exciting to expand the garden’s impact to every single student at the school. Or, better put to say that it is exciting that every single student will have an impact on the garden! Today we composted apples, and had almost an entire garbage bin full of them!
Earlier, the classes were busy turning the compost bin, harvesting lettuce seeds, and making floral bouquets for the front office. We also had a talk about patience because we found that all the baby carrots had been pulled prematurely earlier in the week.
Best quote of the day, from a student who skipped recess to help out in the garden. While in the act she said, “I like working in the garden and shoveling the compost. I can concentrate… but there’s no stress.”
