This week at Markham Middle School students created new mulch rows. To get started, students used rakes, hoes, and shovels to aerate the soil and pull out weeds.
The area was now cleared for the project. Armed with wheelbarrows and shovels, the students diverted mulch from a enormousness heap to the project area. Mulch was dumped into straight lines creating the new rows. Not only will the rows serve as walkways, but it will also prevent soil compaction and add nutrients to the soil as it decomposes.
Additionally, the students planted flowers and lettuce in between the rows. They learned what is considered a seedling and how to transplant it safely.
Keywords of the day – MULCH, TRANSPLANT and SEEDLINGS!! Mulch, transplant, and seedlings.
Next week we will take a look at the plants and see how they are doing!
